5 Great reasons to Buy a Pre-Owned Cell phone

Save Money, Reduce waste, Contribute to the cause.

If you’re like us, you probably don’t like to spend a lot of money. And even if that’s not true, I can almost promise you the following statements are true.

  1. You’re second favourite price is cheap
  2. You’re favourite price is free!

While we can’t promise you a free phone, at least not until our next giveaway, we can offer you some free tips on how you can save money on your next device. So without further adieu, here are 5 great reasons to buy a pre-owned cell phone:

1. Why buy pre-owned? You’re Saving money.. In more ways than one!

First of all, hold the phone! The latest Apple iPhone 11 64GB is listed at $979 brand new. The same phone, used, is $665. That’s a $300  value in savings when you buy it used instead! The iPhone 11 model launched in September 2019. It’s  only been 3 whole months since it’s release! Gee willikers, new mobile phones sure do depreciate fast! Almost as soon as you drive it off of the lot (so to speak).

Second, of course you don’t have to buy a new phone upfront. You can sign up with most mobile phone companies in Canada using a 2 year, easy payment agreement and just receive the newest iPhone for $0! Okay so that’s very affordable... Isn’t it?

Now you may have firsthand experience, know a co-worker, a family member or friend who signed up for a 2 year contract with a mobile phone company in Canada, paying anywhere from $80-$110 per month for their cell phone plan. Seriously, that's a lot of money to dish out for a cell phone plan. More than half the money that pays for the phone plan is used to finance the phone itself.

Now you’re paying $1,900-$2,600 for a brand new phone and plan over the course of 2 years… Originally priced at $979! Well shoot, it seemed like a great idea 2 years ago!

Thirdly, unlocked used phones are compatible with a variety of cell service providers. This means that with a used device you can choose any carrier you like, while remaining flexible to switch carriers when a better deal shows up on your doorstep. With this kind of flexibility you don’t have to get suckered into a 2 year contract with any of the big boy cell service providers all the while paying obscene amounts of money. Providers like Freedom and Public mobile are examples of cheap carrier alternatives available in Canada. They have unlimited talking (Nation wide) combined with, unlimited texting (National and International) and 2-8GB of data plans for $35-$50 a month that are very easy to set up! … Woah, let me get this straight, I can buy an unlocked, used, Samsung Galaxy S7 for $200 and only spend $35/month?! Hmmm.. Do I pay $420 /year on my cell phone plan? Or $1,300/year?... Hey! That extra $1300 dollars sure is looking good. I can buy 995 churros at DisneyLand with that extra money! Delicious!!

Canadians pay 15%-40% more money on their cell phone plans than Americans. Don’t think you’re getting a great deal on easy payment agreements forcing you to pay $100 +/month for 2 years. Do the smart thing and save your money in more ways than one!

2. You’re helping the environment!

Purchasing a secondhand phone reduces electronic waste. Y’know, millions of tons of cell phones being chucked into landfills, where they seep harmful chemicals into the soil, water and air. Purchasing a second hand phone is a small step in the right direction to eliminating electronic waste. When you buy used phones, you’re really giving a device a second life. These would-be obsolete devices often have years of remaining life in them.

Wow! So I’m saving money and helping the environment!

3. Phones have a longer life cycle than commonly thought, which is even more money in your pocket!

You heard right! Companies like eMobile are buying used and damaged phones to be tested and repaired. Once tested and certified these  “throw-away” phones provide cost savings that leave more money in your pocket. These phones work like brand new when repaired professionally, extending their life to the next user.

4. No pressure, How convenient!

That’s right! With the simplicity of e-commerce when shopping for a pre-owned phone, you won’t be pressured into signing a contract. There won’t be pressure coming from the sales rep at the good ‘ol fashioned brick-and-mortar cell phone shop or kiosk at the mall. You can have peace of mind knowing that you won’t have a sales rep pushing you into trying a pricier model of a phone. And you can avoid all of those endless confusing calculations trying to compare each subsidized phone plan and figure out what you’re actually getting.  Not only that, by shopping online for a pre-owned device, you won’t even have to get off your couch! This gives you more freedom to choose phone models you loved in the past (as well as more recent models) that your phone carrier discontinued or doesn’t carry. You can do this at home on your computer, in the bathroom with your current phone, standing in your front lawn wondering why your neighbours have to have a GMC Savanna and a BMW while your on your tablet. It’s just that simple. No pressure? Customer convenience? Sign me up! (Just kidding, there's no contracts).

5. Reliability is key!

Okay so ordering a pre-owned phone from the internet can be scary for some people, that’s fair. However, everything nowadays is linked to an online review system keeping companies and sellers highly accountable and competing harder for customer loyalty. Why is that? Social proof is at the heart of growth and scale-ability. Ecommerce stores know this, and that’s why they are eager to embrace accountability systems like Paypal and Google reviews. Paypal in particular, is a great example of this. Online stores often encourage customers to use Paypal so they can bridge this trust. Paypal is designed to protect sensitive information like your credit card number, bank account number. They also offer purchase protection that will cover you in case you have any transaction problems. This makes online shopping safer. So when you see a highly rated online review for a company, let’s say eMobile for example, with pre-owned phones that clearly have happy customers, You know for sure that this is a safe and reliable purchase, all done online and delivered to your door.

Perhaps, if after all of these remarkably logical reasons, you’re still not convinced to buy a used phone, there’s still one more tip you can benefit from. If you prefer to buy new, you can still sell your old phone (damaged or not) and contribute to a new decade of affordable cell phones, affordable plans, eliminating your electronic waste, no pressure from sales reps, and convenient reliability. All while still getting cash! Hopefully we’ve caught your interest, if we have check us out at eMobile.
